Art and Design

“To be an artist is to believe in life.” Henry Moore

Curriculum Intent:

Through the teaching of Art and D.T. at Haresfield, we aim to provide a well-rounded and diverse education. Art allows children to ignite their inner creativity and gives them avenues to express their thoughts, feelings and understandings in new and exciting ways. Art education has been directly linked to gains in maths, writing, reading and other subject areas as well as deepening their cultural understanding of the world around them. We also recognise the important role art can take in promoting a sense of well-being and calmness. Our hope, through our exciting arts program, is to develop culturally aware, creative students, with a knowledge of the importance of art and creativity in their future lives. Most importantly it gives students a different pathway to achieve their learning and show their understanding.

CURRICULUM Implementation:

The basis of the Art and Design Technology curriculum is to teach students about famous artists and art movements as well as teaching them the skills of art and design technology, through a range of media. Lessons are often closely linked to the topic being studied or might take place over a full day.

At Haresfield School we focus on ensuring that children’s artwork is celebrated across the school community either digitally or through our many sharing events including our Summer Art Exhibition, Christmas mobiles and Design Technology days. Not only is children’s creativity now evident in their classrooms; we have also had successful art shows and worked with a range of artists. A ceramics artist worked with us to create a beautiful tiled plaque for the spiritual garden. All children have the opportunity to visit galleries to be inspired by art and to use this to motivate them to improve their skills.

Our Art curriculum is divided into 3 phases :-

EYFS & KS1 – Reception, Year 1 and Year 2

Lower Key Stage 2 – Year 3 and Year 4
