PSHE Statement of Intent
At Haresfield C of E Primary School, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum, with a clear focus on developing the children’s understanding of their place within the world and their responsibilities to others. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos and at the core of what we do every day. British Values are promoted through the overarching aims and objectives of PSHE by supporting our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.

The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more. At Haresfield, PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

At Haresfield we deliver the PSHE curriculum by utilising first hand experiences and sharing good practice. We encourage our teachers to use a PSHE curriculum to equip pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.

We believe that PSHE plays a vital part of primary education and needs to be taught at least weekly. This enables staff to ensure full coverage of PSHE, RSE and SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) is taught in their year group. There are always occasions where teachers may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue arisen in their own class. PSHE is integral to the development of children values in order for them to become a positive citizen in a forever changing community. PSHE is an important part of school worship were children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured and our School Values are intentionally planned with close links to this curriculum.


The Scheme of work also includes opportunities to link British Values, SMSC and whole school events into the curriculum.

The spiral curriculum starts in EYFS and follows the children through to Year 6. The distribution of the lessons complements key campaigns throughout the year such as Anti-bullying Week, fair trade and our charity work.
All learning activities used in our curriculum allow opportunities for discussion and debate. Open learning activities provide an opportunity for pupils to develop their skills, knowledge and attitude. We never underestimate the impact of children debating or discussing- even practising using language or talking about feelings can help them develop key skills for the future.

Our curriculum is divided into 3 phases :-

Reception Year One and Year 2;
Year Three and Year Four;
Year Five and Year Six;

Children will demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.

Children will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school – attendance will be in-line with national and behaviour will be good.

Children will be able to share their opinions and discuss right from wrong.

Children will become healthy and responsible members of society, having empathy and compassion for others.
