At Haresfield, we are excited to introduce our new reading spine - a carefully curated collection of high-quality texts that every child will experience during their time with us from Year 1 to Year 6. The reading spine is a selection of exceptional books that form the core of our whole class reading curriculum. These are texts that we believe every child should have the opportunity to read and discuss together, ensuring all our pupils share a rich, common reading experience that will stay with them for years to come.
Our reading spine ensures that:
- Every child experiences a wide range of high-quality literature, including both classic and contemporary texts
- All pupils are exposed to challenging, ambitious vocabulary that extends their language and comprehension skills
- Children develop their reading skills through guided discussion of carefully chosen texts that inspire curiosity and a love of reading
- We build a shared reading culture across the school, with books that children can talk about together across year groups
- Our pupils encounter diverse authors, genres and perspectives that broaden their understanding of the world
How does it work?
- Each year group has a selection of core texts chosen specifically for their age and stage of development
- Children read one book per half term or whole term, depending on the length and complexity of the text
- During our daily reading lessons, teachers read aloud from the text while children follow along in their own copies
- Teachers lead rich discussions, model reading strategies, and guide children to develop deeper understanding through carefully planned questions and activities
- These shared reading experiences complement the books children read independently through our Little Wandle phonics programme and at home
