Writing at Haresfield
At Haresfield, we follow a carefully structured approach to teaching writing that ensures every child develops the skills, confidence and creativity to become an effective writer. Our writing curriculum is built around engaging, high-quality texts that inspire children and provide meaningful contexts for their learning.
Each writing unit follows a 12+ day learning journey that takes children from initial engagement with a text, through explicit teaching of grammar and writing techniques, to producing, editing and publishing their own high-quality writing. This systematic approach ensures that children not only learn the technical skills they need, but also understand how to apply them purposefully to create writing for different audiences and purposes.
Throughout each unit, we place a strong emphasis on:
- Rich vocabulary development - introducing and modelling ambitious words that children learn to use confidently in context
- Explicit grammar teaching - ensuring children understand how grammar choices enhance their writing
- Purposeful planning - teaching children to plan effectively before they write
- Oral rehearsal - giving children opportunities to practise and refine their ideas before committing them to paper
- Continuous editing and improvement - developing children's ability to read, reflect on and improve their own work
By the end of each unit, children publish a final piece of writing that showcases their learning and celebrates their achievement as writers.
